About Prabuddha Raha

From Roots to Resonance

Prabuddha Raha began his musical journey at the tender age of three, inspired by India’s rich cultural heritage. An alumnus of Kolkata’s esteemed Presidency College, he went on to earn a Diploma in Rabindra Sangeet from Dakshinee in 1978.

To deepen his artistry, he received advanced training from eminent Tagoreans including Acharya Sailajaranjan Majumdar, Smt. Kanika Banodyopadhyay, Suvo Guhathakurta, and Rano Guhathakurta. His musical education also encompassed classical vocal training under Prof. Debiranjan Bandyopadhyay, Panchakabir music with Shri Arghya Sen, and Bengali modern songs under the legendary Pintu Bhattacharya.

Beginning at the age of 11, his nine-year tutelage under Bhattacharya immersed him in timeless romantic melodies known for their emotional depth and modern elegance. This parallel training across genres fostered in him a well-rounded musical sensibility, seamlessly blending classical nuance with lyrical expression.

This diverse foundation shaped Prabuddha Raha’s distinctive style, known for its soulful tradition, expressive modernity, and emotionally textured voice. Celebrated for his rhythmic precision and fresh interpretations, he brings new life to timeless compositions while remaining true to their original essence. He has enthralled audiences across the globe with his versatile command over a wide range of musical genres, performing with equal finesse in both Bengali and Hindi.

Discography - Melodic Milestones

Prabuddha Raha’s illustrious recording career spans over four decades, beginning with his first published work under the banner of Dakshinee in 1984. Since then, he has built a vast discography that reflects both depth and diversity—ranging from timeless Rabindrasangeet to Bengali modern songs—released through iconic labels such as HMV-Saregama, Polygram, Cosmic Harmony, Bhavna Records & Cassettes, and more. His work has consistently received acclaim for its authenticity, finesse, and emotional clarity.

In recent years, he has continued to evolve artistically with impactful digital releases, including works in the realm of golden-era Bengali modern songs, bringing new life to classic compositions.      In recent years, he has revived classics through carefully curated YouTube tributes, offering a heartfelt homage to Sri Pintu Bhattacharya, where he recreated songs such as  - “Jani na kokhon je se” ,“Ek Tajmahal goro”, "Sonaroder gaan"  - weaving emotional austerity with rhythmic nuance—beautifully blending nostalgia with renewed emotional depth.

Music Mind - Tagore’s Global Resonance

In 2016, Prabuddha Raha, in collaboration with physicist and pianist Soumitra Sengupta, co-founded "Music Mind"— A Musical production that explores Rabindranath Tagore’s role as a composer and the subtle yet profound influences of Western classical music on his creations. Blending scholarship with performance, the initiative has brought a fresh interpretive lens to Tagore's oeuvre.

Since its inception, Music Mind has been performed in over 20 acclaimed shows across India and internationally, including the U.S., Malaysia, and Egypt. Most recently, it received an overwhelming response during a special tribute performance at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai on May 10, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the project's journey

Playback & Beyond

Prabuddha Raha made a lasting impression with his soulful rendition of ‘Bipulo Tarango Re’ in Aparna Sen’s national award-winning film Paromitar Ekdin. He also lent his voice to Sudeshna Roy’s Benche Thakar Gaan, both performances earning acclaim for their authentic Tagorean expression.

Beyond playback singing, he has composed and performed music for a wide range of telefilms and documentaries, and served as the music director for several projects, including the feature film adaptation of Tagore’s Chaar Adhyay. His body of work reflects a deep commitment to musical storytelling across both cinematic and televised formats.

Global Reach

With a voice steeped in tradition and a spirit open to the world, Prabuddha Raha has carried the timeless melodies of Rabindranath Tagore far beyond the borders of Bengal. His musical journey has taken him across continents—from the cultural corridors of the United States , Australia, Singapore, Malaysia to the historic landscapes of Egypt and Bangladesh—where he has not only performed, but also led immersive workshops that delve into the deeper nuances of Tagore’s music.
